What is Portland Cement?
Portland Cement, often referred to simply as cement (Semen in Indonesia), is the predominant type of cement globally. Developed in the 19th century by Joseph Aspdin in Portland, England, this cement variant has become the cornerstone of construction projects worldwide.
Its primary use lies in concrete production, where it forms the backbone alongside aggregate and water. Not just limited to concrete, Portland Cement is also a key component in mortar, plaster, and grout.
The Composition
Derived primarily from limestone, Portland Cement undergoes a meticulous process involving heating, grinding, and the addition of gypsum. This results in the creation of a fine gray cement powder. This versatile product, known as Type I, finds its place as the general purpose cement.
Navigating the Indonesian Cement Landscape
In Indonesia, choosing the right cement brand can be a task in itself, given the numerous options available. Cement compositions generally adhere to Portland Cement standards, but the specific proportions of components may vary based on the manufacturer and the source of raw materials.
